It has become fashionable in some circles to claim that America has been judged by God and that we stand ready to fall into an economic depression and the end of America as we have known it.
This idea has come to me from many different angles, so many in fact that it would be easy to call it a consensus. Like Y2K a few years ago, many people are running scared for fear of what lay just around the corner, preparing for the worst and expecting God’s wrath at any moment.
I can remember looking for a voice of reason during the Y2K hysteria and finding very little. Famous preachers claimed they had received instruction from God and urged members of their congregation to store up to 2 months of food due to the economic chaos that was about to come. Churches from all over bought electric generators, stored food and in some cases, stockpiled weapons.
I knew one Pastor that sold his house, filled the basement of his church with canned goods, cancelled all bank accounts and moved his family into two offices in the church’s second floor.
I know, I know, that sounds extreme. Most did not sound extreme though as they told us that it was better to be safe than sorry and that God expected us to use wisdom “just in case”.
Fast forward to today. We have a myriad of voices claiming that God’s wrath is about to fall on the United States due to our sin, the prosperity Gospel and a whole myriad of other factors that people point to as being proof-positive that we are in dire straits. In fact, to take a dissenting opinion at this point puts you in the category of the “pillow prophets”, those prophets for hire that call out ‘peace and safety’ when there is none to be found. As if God’s prophets are only in the business of death and destruction and if you call for anything else, you can not be from God.
But God is always in the hope business, friends, always. I have been reading and listening to the words about the fall of America now for some time. And one characteristic has stood out above all others- they seem to actually want it to happen. There is a general acknowledgement among those calling for economic ruin that America will not listen until our system fails and depression sets in. The truth of this can be seen in Sierra Leone, which I hear is the poorest nation on earth. There the population is 60 percent muslim and 30 percent Christian and revival is present everywhere…oh wait, no it isn’t.
I wonder what the criteria is for God’s wrath. Because the things that the Doom Brigade say make us worthy of wrath can also be considered things that make us an ideal place for missionary work.
They say it is because of our sin but sin makes us an ideal place to preach the good news. After all, a place with no sin may be hard to convert, correct? Maybe it is due to our affluence as a nation. But there are more affluent places on earth that are further away from God than we are. Maybe it is due to our religious error. But we are the most diverse nation on earth, with thousands of different people groups coming here from all over the globe.
Maybe it is because America has failed to embrace their message and any place that rejects you must be wrong, correct?
America has left the White Anglo-Saxon Protestant heritage of it’s fathers. We teach evolution and have taken prayer out of schools. We have legal abortion and have killed over 5o million unborn babies (Europe actually leads in this). We export a false message around the world, infecting churches in poor countries with greed. We have lost the true Gospel and have turned aside to lies instead. We meet in buildings and give our leaders titles. Sorry, that last one was just me getting caught up in the moment.
Those things can seem to be true and damning evidence, who can argue that? But do those things mean that God has given up on us and is ready to judge or do they instead mean that God has a perfect environment to send a group of people on fire for him to minister?
If America is too far gone there is only one place to lay blame, at the steps of our churches. You have failed to preach a Gospel capable of saving and instead you have perfected the art of comforting the 99. But the solution to the problem that my generation has inherited from those who came before us is not wrath.
Wrath means that the enemy has won, that a place has so little good about it that God must strike it from the earth. Limited wrath means, in America’s case according to the Doom Brigade, that God must take us from our place as a financial leader. Instead, the economic power base would shift to Europe- where they really deserve God’s blessing (sorry, my gift of sarcasm is on overdrive today). Not sure how that makes sense but whatever.
The issue that we have inherited is a church sick with apathy and complacency. We have inherited selfishness and me-centered message that can save no one. To combat this, we must avoid escapism at all costs.
This is what happened during the 60’s when everyone was so convinced that the end was near that they did nothing about the counter-culture- believing that it was a sign of the end so why fight it. We see why they should have fought today, don’t we?
Brace yourselves up like men! Who cares if it is judgment or not? Your job is to fight for the spiritual health of America, your job is to seek and save those that are lost, your job is to stand between the living and the dead- not put your head in the sand and say “I told you so…”
Revivals don’t happen where the church is on fire- they happen when interest in religion has died and needs to be revived. It happens on the verge of judgment, when we need a miracle or we will perish. It happens in a place like right here and right now.
And if no revival comes it is not because God did not care, it was because YOU did not care and so no true revival was ever sought.

I don’t know that America has to return to its “White Anglo-Saxon” history. I personally prefer the melting pot.
But I agree that the reports of America’s demise is greatly exaggerated. Every one of the cities that Jesus spoke of in the beginning of Revelation have turned Muslim but God is going to begin His wrath on the country that sends the most missionaries? Not likely.
America is not too far gone. Those lukewarm are kindling for the next revival.
Well, from what I see this nation has gone too far we can not keep killing babies and say it is okay for men to marry men and then to top it off. Have a man living with another man in the puplit teaching the word of God.
Yes, I believe we will see revival in groups of people. I am always revived when I am out doing the Lords command to reach the lost. Every time I go into the jail I get revived.
Hey Bro JC!
Bro. JC I have to ask you bro. Have you always held this view on the Judgment of God or is this a new change of heart for you? I’m just curious. I will have to say that I was surprised to read your view, with the style of preaching you have and knowing your repentance crowd back ground. I guess I’m just curious.
I’d like to start of by saying that I certainly do not wish harm on people no matter how reprobate they are. I do believe that God can change the most vile evil heart and change that person. The power of the Gospel is a changed life. Man, I’m proof of that.– We all are! God can reach to the gutter and empower us and change us! Amen!
There may be some militant “Judgment of God is coming!” type people who desire the fist of God to crush the enemy. I am not that type of person. But I see the signs of times and I read the Bible and see where it says (Psa 9:17) “The wicked shall be turned into hell, And all the nations that forget God.” Brother I see our nation forgetting God big time!
Here are just a few stark realities in our present culture and generation:
The divorce rate in America has doubled in the last 50 years
(This is true in the Church as well)
The number of babies being born to unwed parents has sextupled in the last 50 years
The rate of violent crime such as rape, incest, molestation and murder has quadrupled in the last 50 yrs
The suicide rate among teenagers has tripled in the last 50 yrs.
The illegal drug trade had skyrocketed in America to a multi billion dollar industry.
And in spite of the fact that America has the highest number of professing Christians in the industrialized world We have the highest percentage of single parent families in the world.
We have the highest abortion rate in the world.
We have the highest rate of sexually transmitted diseases in the world.
We have the highest teen age birthrate in the world
We have the highest rate of teenage drug use in the world.
..We’ve forgot God.
John Wesley once said “What one generation tolerates the next one will embrace.”
I believe we have come to a place in this country that we embrace things that years ago we would have never even talked about especially in the Church of Jesus Christ.
Another scripture that comes to mind is the end of Luke 12:48 “everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be required.”
America has been given a lot from God, we have been abundantly blessed and a lot is required. But I feel we have ignored Him and for the most part want nothing to do with God.
There may be a myriad of voices claiming “God’s wrath” I really don’t pay attention to any of them. But one of the most respect men of God in our day is David Wilkerson and in many ways he has been an awesome example of truth and balance. I really believe he and Carter Conlon have been a voice that God has used in our day. I want to paste two paragraphs below on his view on the Judgment of God:
“America has sinned against the greatest light.
Other nations are just as sinful, but none are as flooded with gospel light as ours. God is going to judge America for its violence, its crimes, its backsliding, its murdering of millions of babies, its flaunting of homosexuality and sadomasochism, its corruption, its drunkenness and drug abuse, its form of godliness without power, its lukewarmness toward Christ, its rampant divorce and adultery, its lewd pornography, its child molestations, its cheatings, its robbings, its dirty movies, and its occult practices. In one hour it will all be over. To the natural mind it is insanity to come against a prosperous, powerful nation and cry out, “It’s all over! Judgment is at the door! Our days are numbered!” The Church is asleep, the congregations are at ease, and the shepherds slumber. How they will scoff and laugh at this message. Theologians will reject it because they can’t fit it into their doctrine. The pillow prophets of peace and prosperity will publicly denounce it.
I no longer care. God has made my face like flint and put steel in my backbone. I am blowing the Lord’s trumpet with all my might. Let the whole world and all the church call me crazy, but I must blow the trumpet and awaken God’s people. Believe it or not, America is about to be shaken and set aside by swift and horrible judgments. Many other praying believers who have been shut in with God are hearing the very same message – “Judgment is at the door! Prepare, awaken!” –David Wikerson
The Church of Jesus Christ needs to rise like never before and be light while we still have light. For night is coming when no man can work. (John 9:4) All of us need to step out of our four walled buildings and go reach the lost.
You ended you article with these statements: “Brace yourselves up like men! Who cares if it is judgment or not? Your job is to fight for the spiritual health of America, your job is to seek and save those that are lost, your job is to stand between the living and the dead- not put your head in the sand and say “I told you so…”—True word’s my brother!
We may not totally agree on everything but I love your heart and your passion. I pray for God to continue to use you in a mighty way where ever He sees fit!
bless you Bro!

Hi Deb. I agree with you- abortion is a horrible tragedy and it must be stopped. I agree about the moral decline of America and how far we have fallen.
What I do not agree with is the idea that we have gone too far and that it is too late. The people that I see and minister to every day demands that I not believe that it is too late. The hurting masses that have never heard a straight Gospel message demand that none of us bury our heads and become Chicken Littles.
It is not too late for the lost, for our nation or for us. I have to believe this.
Hey Steve. I have always believed that judgment will come if we do not turn from what we are doing.
But there is a large gap between judgment coming and it already being “too late” right now.
America is in trouble, yes. But is it the worst place in the world and in need of judgment right now? I do not believe that it is.
Romania has the highest abortion rate in the world followed by Russia. Both of those countries have persecuted Christians, done horrible crimes against humanity and worship money. Both have less than 5 percent church attendance.
Neither has an Elijah’s Fire to stand for truth and proclaim truth. Neither has a Carter Conlon, David Wilkerson, or any of our preachers that stand for what is right.
People are still being saved here by the boatload every single day. Far more are being saved than are falling away and that can’t be said of every place.
We are a nation of extremes, it is true. But God still has a voice here and if that is true then there is still hope here.
I reject any teaching that claims that America has been judged already and that the economy will collapse this year. Because I have not heard that from God.
I have heard that we must seek and save those that are lost. We must stand hard against abortion, drugs, sin and error. We must break from religious traditionalism and find Jesus as a body.
We must not bury our head and build bunkers.
I do not believe it is too late for any one person who repents and lives for Jesus Christ. I see that in the jails and wherever I witness at to people about Jesus. But, I also see a hate here in this country for things of Jesus. It seems okay to mention God, But do not mention Jesus. You see I can only speak for the country where I was born and have lived my whole life.
I could never have imagined watching two guys kissing on TV say 5 years ago. This country has went downhill at a fast rate.
But, yes people are still getting saved and living for Jesus. I do not bury my head, I still go out to reach the lost anywhere and anytime. That is our job as born-again believers. I also respect David Wilkerson and Carter Conlon. I have meet Carter Conlon, he is what he talks. He has a gentle spirit and heart for the lost.
God Bless,
deb
I know how you feel, Deb, believe me. I was right there not so long ago.
I found that much of my angst came from rejection by the church and its leadership. Now that was a tough one to swallow for sure. But I knew where I was with God in my heart and I saw all the fakes and liars out there being accepted. And I started to really hate. And I wanted judgment as a way to show that I was right and all of “them” were wrong.
That may not be the case with you. But sometimes, especially in jail and street outreach, we can end up marginalized without knowing it.
Even here in Minnesota where a few years ago I would have sworn needed fire and brimstone, there are pockets of real life. In a little 146 person town, they want Jesus so bad it hurts.
Or in Elkhart, Indiana where a prophetic church has broken the mold and has a general of the faith Pastoring and speaking uncompromised truth.
Hollywood, Minneapolis, Buffalo, all over the country we can see the remnant stepping up and living the life.
There is hope in the jailhouse, the church, the streets and the drug den.
We just have to be the change!
God bless you in your work, Deb. So many of us are pulling for you, sister.
Hey bro JC,
Yes it does get discouraging, but no I am not mad at churches let down maybe. But, the word of God tells the love of God will grow cold and it has started. I do not feel marginalized, people will do what they want, I will do what the Lord tells me to do. I can only speak and answer for myself. I will be by myself when I stand before the Lord and have to answer to Him for what I have done for His Kingdom. I still go to church I am not an out of church Christian. Yes, there is a remnant the Lord always has a remnant. My husband and myself are meeting more of them lately, I know this is the hand of God. Could sure use all your prayers keep them coming the harvest is ripe.
Blessings,
deb
JC,
I first want to say that I really like what you are doing. I stumbled onto your blog and checked out your site. I am in the process of reading your writings and am challenged. Thanks. I pray that God bless you, on both sides of eternity.
I just wanted to say that I do agree with you that we can change the path our nation is going. God has relented in His wrath on many occasions.
With that said I do believe that our country is on a dangerous path towards God’s wrath, and deservedly so. Right now our nation has no regard for life. We have killed millions of babies through abortion; we have wholesaled murder through desensitizing video games sold to our young people, some of who go on to commit real murder; we have sent many young people to die in war without any clear mission, and then claim to be ‘One Nation Under God’. We should not deceive ourselves into thinking that God can be mocked. (And I am not saying that you are)
Our sins require blood. What it comes down to is what blood, ours or Jesus’.
With all of that you are right, it is not too late. But when is it too late?
Blessings
Hi Chuck. I think that we can safely assume that it is “too late” when we find ourselves spitting out large chunks of locust parts that have gotten stuck in our teeth while we were dodging fire balls falling from the sky and everyone is living in a van down by the river because there is no economy anymore.
Until then, we work.
During Katrina a few years ago, most of the circles I was around started out by saying that it was judgment against all the sin, the homosexuals, the Bourbon Street Mardi Gras, etc. But then a few of us decided that even if it was judgment, did that lessen our responsibility to love and alleviate the suffering of the survivors? No, we are obligated to work while it is light- until the time comes when no man can work.
I am sick of the talk of America already being judged and it being too late for us. Last I checked, my mouth is locust free.
So I must work.
By the way, I like your blog. I am a HUGE Red Sox fan and I am dying to get a Boston jersey written in Hebrew- that is hilarious!
I have this mental picture of someone hacking on bits of locust. “ACK!” (Remember Bill the Cat?)
I totally believe that we are to work to the end…Amen Brother. Depending on where you stand eschatologicaly, (is that a word) I believe that we will be offering such refuge for the lost in the tribulation as well.
Sorry, had to throw that out there.
Blessings
Yes we are to work while there is still daylight out, cause when it is dark no man can work. The harvet is ripe, I say lets get out there and do some picking….
Yes, Chuck I believe there will be such homes as a place of refuge for the remnant and the lost who come to know Jesus during this time. Just my two cents…
blessings,
debbi
…and when all else fails, don’t forget Jonah’s day and the Ninevites….they were a million times more wicked than America. They killed just as many of their babies, had just as much homosexuality and beastiality, they skinned their prisoners of war ALIVE, ripped open pregnant women in war and many other atrocities that these doom mongers would do well to know about.
I absolutely believe in preaching repentance and judgment when it is clearly what the Spirit is saying, and I believe that to a large extent He is….in warning form. Let’s remember what God said through Jeremiah (paraphrased):”If I say I’m going to wipe out a nation and they repent, I’ll not bring that judgment. If I speak blessing over a nation and they do evil, I’ll smack ‘em down.” In other words, it need not be seen fatalistically. Ezekiel 18 and 33 say the same thing in essence.
It’s not good enough to scream at motorists “the bridge is out!! YOU’RE ALL GONNA DIE!!!” Tell them how to get around it you big dope!! How ’bout an alternate route? Sure, tell them the bridge is out, tell them what happens when you drive off a bridge and even show them pictures if you can. Make it as real and frightening as possible so that they ‘get it’. But dang, you gotta give the alternative route so that folks can stay on course and not just sulk over the condition of the bridge and curse the generations before them that never maintained the bridge and let it fall into such disrepair that it collapsed on its own.
USELESS!!
Welp, I’m hungry. I gotta get me some eats.
mark jr.
good stuff James. While I seem to toggle back and forth between two views here, I look back to the year I was saved and the spiritual climate wasn’t really any better. I am glad someone pressed on preaching the gospel to me. I believe without hope we have nothing to offer anyone.
Hi Mark, hope all is going better on the home front. We are praying for ya’ll.
Hi Mary as well. Yeah, no matter what, we must work while it is day- night is coming when no man can work.
The idea is not to leave America because the preaching is easier elsewhere but rather to be the remedy for what ails this nation.
Be blessed!
